Unit Overview:
The
objectives in this unit are designed to introduce students to Microsoft Word 97
for the purpose of learning word processing basics, basic formatting, desktop
publishing and advanced formatting and editing. The unit is also designed to teach the students the importance of
word processing in the development of professional documents such as letters,
memos, reports, newsletters, etc.
Unit
Objectives:
1.
The
students will be able to apply word processing basics which include the
following:
·
Identifying
parts of the Normal view screen.
·
Switching
between documents, entering text, and saving a document.
·
Moving
the insertion point with the keyboard and highlighting text.
·
Editing
text using a variety of Word features, previewing documents, and printing
documents.
2.
The
students will be able to apply basic formatting which includes the following:
·
Changing
fonts, font style, size, color, and case of text.
·
Aligning
text, changing margins, adjusting indents, and line-spacing.
·
Setting
& using tabs, sorting text & numbered list, inserting the date and
time, and inserting hyphens.
·
Using
AutoFormat As You Type, AutoComplete, and AutoText.
·
Inserting
page breaks and inserting headers and footers.
3.
The
students will be able to use Desktop Publishing concepts with MS Word 97 which
includes the following:
·
Formatting
text into columns
·
Drawing
and manipulating objects
·
Inserting
and scaling clip art
·
Adding
borders and shading to text.
·
Creating
and using templates and wizards
·
Inserting
and formatting tables
4.
The
students will be able to use advanced formatting and editing techniques in MS
Word 97 which include the following:
·
Switching
between along with coping & pasting between multiple documents
·
Working
with multipage documents
·
Checking
the spelling and grammar of documents and using the Thesaurus
·
Finding
specific text and replacing it with other text
·
Creating
footnotes and endnotes
·
Printing
in landscape
·
Creating
a section with formatting that differs from other sections
·
Creating,
applying, and editing styles

Culminating Event:
Product - Newsletter
Purpose - To report current events in clubs, organizations, or sport
teams in
the school or community.
Role - Reporter/Editor
Audience - Fellow/younger/older students, school staff, and community
Note: This can be created by
partners or individually, depending if the student wishes to use the final
project for a Transactive Writing for their portfolio.
Culminating
Performance/Product Overview:
The
students will choose a club, organization, or sports team of their choice and
develop a newsletter for the school.
The newsletter will include photographs, clip art, different font styles,
sizes, and color, and borders along with the use of advanced formatting and
editing techniques. The students will
also have to use digital cameras to take photographs to be included in their
newsletters. The newsletter will
consist of three pages and must have a professional appearance.
Instructions:
1.
The
students will develop a three-page newsletter to be distributed to classmates,
school staff, and the community for the purpose of reporting current events
within the club, organization, or sports team of their choice.
2.
The
newsletter must include the following:

Current
event stories regarding the club, organization, or sports team of their choice
·
Stories
that use correct spelling and capitalization and that are grammatically correct
