Context:

The objectives in this lesson are designed to help the students learn the concepts of wizards in word processing software.  The students will also be able to utilize wizards for the purpose of creating documents such as fax cover letters, letters, and resumes.

Materials/Technology:

Computers w/ Microsoft Office 97 software

Textbook:  Microsoft Office 97 for Windows 95: Tutorial & Applications

                  Computer on Wheels (COW)

Procedures:

  1. The teacher will review the different concepts learned throughout Chapter 5 on desktop publishing.  The teacher will also review the purpose of a template.
  2. The teacher will introduce wizards to the students and compare and contrast the difference between templates and wizards.
  3. The teacher will demonstrate how to use a wizard by completing Activity 5-16 on page 131 of the textbook by using the COW (Computer on Wheels).  The students will be required to complete the steps along with the teacher for the purpose of gaining hands-on-experience.
  4. The students will be required to complete Applications 5-5 through 5-7 on pp. 143-144 of the textbook for the purpose of reinforcing their understanding of how to correctly use wizards to create documents.

Student Assessment:

Students will be assessed on their ability to successfully complete Activity 5-16 on pg. 131 and Applications 5-5 through 5-7 on pp. 143-144.  The students will also be given an activity to create a document in a wizard as an application to be completed on an examination at a later time.  Students will be required to use wizards throughout the semester for the purpose of creating professional documents such as newsletters, resumes, fax cover sheets, reports, etc.

Impact – Reflection/Analysis of Teaching and Learning:

The students were amazed at the concept of a wizard.  They were impressed that a wizard could ask questions and present a document such as memo for them.  They also like the resume wizard because many of them will be taking Electronic Office next year and are aware they will be required to develop a resume.  There were also a few students that needed to develop a resume for job searches at the present time.

I felt that the students were excited to learn about wizards and were able to discuss the differences between templates and wizards.  It is often difficult to get many of the students involved in answering questions during the discussion sessions.  I find that I have to call on them to get a response.  When the students are called upon, they are knowledgeable of the question.  There is a lack of participation when it comes to speaking.  I find the participation to be almost 100% when they are actually performing an activity.

Refinement – Lesson Extension/Follow-up:

The students will be required at the end of the unit on MS Word 97 to utilize the skills learned during the unit in the production of a newsletter reflecting on current events in a club, organization, or sports team of their choice.
