Deep End of the Ocean

This heavy-handed melodrama manages to rise above its manipulative trappings thanks to solid performances. Pfeiffer plays a mom visiting Chicago who loses her three-year-old son in the crowded lobby of a hotel. Nine heartbreaking and emotionally self-abusive years later, Pfeiffer and family coincidentally move to Chicago only to discover the boy is alive and living two blocks down the street. Supercop Goldberg--who also dispenses expert domestic advice at the oddest moments--is called in to help. The story's path is not as sinister as the setup would suggest, though the emotional healing process does become rather arduous. Pfeiffer emotes well and the supporting cast, including Williams as her husband, keeps pace.
