HALLELUJAH
Written By: Joseph R. Terrell, 2008
Tune: Leonard Cohen
When David looked with lustful eye,
And caused a faithful man to die,
His conscience said, “You’re going to get what’s due you,
But Nathan said, “The Lord forgives.
You will not die. You’re going to live.”
And David’s heart gave out a Hallelujah.
Refrain: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
You thought that you could do so well,
‘Cause the preacher got you scared of hell.
But you don’t really do so good, now do you?
But the gospel comes to us like this:
We were born to fall, He was born to lift.
Thus from our lips He draws a Hallelujah.
And so our lives go on and on.
We look ahead, we still press on.
And Christ says to His people, “I’ll come to you.”
And though they often do the wrong;
They’re broke, but their Redeemer’s strong
These broken, holy ones cry Hallelujah.
The Lord has prearranged a day
When many men will hear him say,
“Depart from me, you sinners. I never knew you.”
Then the King will turn to His right hand,
Saying, “Enter in My Father’s land.”
And heav’n will ring aloud with “Hallelujah!”
So if you’ve come to love this word,
If in your heart God’s voice you’ve heard,
That tells you how He brings salvation to you.
Then sing unto the Lord a song.
Sing it loud and sing it long.
And give to Him His well-earned Hallelujah.
Dear Friends,
Several weeks ago I came upon a video on You Tube of Leonard Cohen singing a song called "Hallelujah." Cohen was a folk singer of the 60's and 70's. The song was a well-written description of things from the viewpoint of the flesh. It prompted several thoughts about the world Hallelujah and its use. Hallelujah is made of two Hebrew words Hallal meaning priase and Jah being a shortened form of Jehovah's name. So it means, quite literally, Praise Jehovah.
As I listened to the song and thought on a few of the lines Cohen wrote, It occured to me that there is only one class of people who really know what Hallelujah means and can say it from the heart: Sinners saved by the grace of God.
So I wrote a lyric on the word Halleljah. If you would like to hear the music that Cohen wrote, which is the music I used to write the lyric, just go to You Tube and search for "Leonard Cohen" and Hallelujah.
God's grace to you,
Joe T
