He the gates of hell has broken,
Jesus Christ the Kings of Kings;
Gracious words can now be spoken,
Let the heavenly anthems ring!
Death is swallowed up in vic'try,
"Now, O death, where is thy sting?"
Jesus Christ has crushed the Serpent,
Now he rules o'er everything.
Wrath of God for wretched sinners,
Thundered 'gainst His blameless soul;
Holy one, made sin for sinners,
Paying justice' awful toll.
Yet the Son of God endures it,
"It is finished!" hear Him cry;
Rising from the dead assured it,
Now He lives no more to die.
Dead He lay in death's dark dungeon,
Suff'ring from the Serpent's bite;
In His veins the deadly poison,
Plunged His soul in darkest night.
But the Holy One of heaven,
Rose with healing in His wings;
Burst th' eternal bonds of death and
Gave our souls a cause to sing!
